The Industry

Tanks above groundIt seems that the new industry buzzword lately for UST and AST owner/operators are, inspect and maintain. The EPA encourages this statement as well as a reminder logo to remind the petroleum industry of such practices. This is exactly what our company focus is all about “inspect and maintain”. This is our focus and this is why this system was developed. Water monitoring and removal is critical for all fuel storage systems. Poor operations and maintenance procedures for water monitoring and removal from storage systems can lead to a number of problems from degradation of fuel quality and subsequent vehicle performance to microbial contamination, phase separation and damage of the entire storage system. In today’s new fuels with lead removed and the recent phase-outs of MTBE, these fuels are more susceptible to moisture accumulation. These new alcohol enhanced fuels have the potential for separation and biodegradation accelerated by water. For example, lead was a natural poison to the microbes that can grow in a moist environment. In today’s lead and MTBE free fuels, microbial growth can more readily occur. This is why the industry regulators and organizations are recommending to tank owners to, “Establish an operating and maintenance practice to monitor and remove water when it is detected and to have regularly scheduled tank bottom inspections” Alcohol enhanced fuels have great environmental and economic benefits, but they do require good housekeeping. The industry needs to be educated on the importance of having a regularly scheduled maintenance program for their UST’s and AST’s to prevent phase separations or microbial contamination. Ultimately, this pro-active maintenance should result in less leaky tank situations for our environment.

The System

The patent pending system utilizes a fiber optic scope and controllable probe with an extraction device that can visually inspect and clean fuel storage tank bottoms simultaneously with any fuel level. Do not remove the fuel from the tank, Optic Fuel Clean uses the fuel to service the tank. The cleaning unit is used to inspect and clean all types of fuel. This system is designed to locate and remove water, sludge, bacteria, rust particles and sediment in all locations on the tank bottom including any low spots where water and bacteria accumulate. The system can also remove the contamination and place it in our on board holding tanks or pump it into drums/barrels for you to dispose of properly. The good fuel and contaminates are filtered through our filtering system and the clean fuel is returned back to the storage tank while the contaminates are removed at the same time. One of the big benefits of this system is the customer continues to pump fuel while we are inspecting and cleaning the tank bottoms. There is no tank downtime or lost revenue for the station owners. Another big benefit is because we can visually see in the tank as well as what we are removing and we filter out the contaminates, we take very little good fuel for a substantial savings on waste removal. An annual maintenance program to inspect and clean tanks is available.

Field Facts and Findings

We have experienced in the field that rarely is the water and microbial growth near the fill end of the UST’s. Most of the contamination is found near the probe and pump areas of the tanks. Because of this microbial growth around (the quite area) where the ATG probes rest, the effects of this is many false monitor readings. We have inspected and cleaned tanks that the monitor read 1 ½ “inches of water and have found very little water. On the other hand, we have seen monitors that have read 0”inches of water and have removed 50 to 150 gallons of water and bacteria. After we pull up the probe and clean around where the probe rests and clean the probe itself of sludge and bacteria, we then get accurate readings from the monitors. Because monitors read 0” inches of water, it does not mean the tank is free of water. A good percentage of tanks we have inspected have been sloped to one side or the other and have removed a great deal of water from these tanks. Monitors can only read or detect water if there is water around the probe, the monitors we have seen do not detect water at the ends of the tank. There have been times where we are called to a site to clean tank bottoms because of slow flows and frequent filter changes, but because of the lack of regular tank maintenance and tank bottom inspections the sludge has accumulated so much that the sludge becomes very dense or calcified. In these situations the tank owner needs to have the tank physically cleaned by way of manned entry. This can cost the owner many thousands of dollars to have this type of service performed. We recommend to have UST’s and AST’s inspected and cleaned at least once annually to prevent the effects of water and microbial contamination.
